RIP Earl Scruggs

Somehow I missed this. Bluegrass great Earl Scruggs passed away over the weekend. A truly talented man who revolutionized the genre. In the fine tradition oof completely forgetting about music I love until just after the artist dies, enjoy his classic "Foggy Mountain Breakdown."

I love his music so much. "I will not say do not weep..." etc. But he was 88 years old and lived a very long and rich life, and died knowing that he had a legacy embraced by generations. For me the saddest part is that we're losing all the living links to the culture of that place and time he came from. Inevitable, though.

Yes, I thought about the ages - this was not a premature death! But whatever the age I always get sad when great musicians die, because as you say we're losing those living links. That's probably more of a loss with bluegrass than other genres, because it's such an oral tradition.
