If you could spend a day with any fictional character, who would it be and what would the two of you do?
J. Edgar Hoover - but only if I'd already had a few decades to get to know him. I'm talking about the fictionalized version of him we see in the recent movie, so I think that counts.
Toward the end of J. Edgar, it's revealed that many of the events portrayed in the movie never really happened. He didn't make such-and-such arrest, this victim hadn't really talked to him, and so on. The movie is structured as a set of flashbacks as an older Hoover dictates his memoirs, but it turns out he's been deluding himself to the point that he believes his own lie. Truly.
And yet the man was a genius, and a cipher. I don't want the decades to have more time. I want the decades so I'll be able to read him like Tolson. Quite aside from having all those interesting stories, I find the challenge invigorating.
Also: the man has the most interesting sexuality I think I've ever encountered. He's gay but so driven to succeed by his mother that he proposes not once but twice, and his grief over his mother's death drives him to crossdressing, and it seems the most natural thing in the world. I would love to see how he would interact with me as a woman.
