Today I went looking for something to share for First Contact day and came across this gem. Leonard Nimoy discussing the Jewish roots of the V hand gesture.

Isn't that cool? He's been open about that for decades -- it was one of the first things I learned about Star Trek, I think. It now makes going to a Jewish graveyard retroactively funny, all those gravestones with Vulcan salutes on them.

I was in a (non-religious, general) graveyard a few months back with a neighbor's kid I've sort of adopted as my kid sister, and they had a grave with the shin sign. The Kid was puzzled by it and bothered, which confused me - until she said she got that some people were Trekkies but she thought that was carrying it a bit far.

It's a fascinating piece of history. I knew that there were some Jewish customs buried in Star Trek but didn't know the specifics and enjoyed finding out a bit more.
