V is for Vietnam War, because that's where my mind is these days. (On war generally, not that particular one.) It's a theme connected to two songs in my mind.

First, the obvious:

And the not-so-obvious.

If you missed the Vietnam connect you're not alone. As one of Mr. John's collaborators said in an interview:

"Daniel had been the most misinterpreted song that we'd ever written" explained Bernie in the "Two Rooms" tribute project. "The story was about a guy that went back to a small town in Texas, returning from the Vietnam war. They'd launded him when he came home and treated him like a hero. But he just wanted to go home, go back to the farm, and try to get back to the life that he'd led before. I just embellished that and like everything I write, I probably ended up being very esoteric, but it is a song that is important to me, because it was the one thing I said about the Vietnam War. I wanted to write something that was sympathetic to the people that came home".

The last verse, which makes all this clear, was cut for length.

I think of you as being into country, maybe easy listening or light rock.

You wouldn't be wrong. I also enjoy folk, Celtic, and world music, medieval and Renaissance music and most kinds of classical music, Broadway show tunes, New Age, and thanks to the DH, Native American. But even though I don't care for a good deal of the more raucous music of today, some artists and some songs will still appeal to me, even in rap and hip-hop or heavier sorts of rock, which I don't always care for.

The first time I saw Pink was on Ellen, and then shortly afterward on The View. Both times she performed "So What!" which totally tickled my fancy! It's so honest and open and defiant! I've since heard some of her other music, and have yet to hear one I DISlike, and a couple of interviews with her, in which she comes across as intelligent, tough, and compassionate.

My musical tastes are kind of eclectic.
