I saw the first Tennant Christmas special last night. That duel between Ten and the other dude was the most splendiferous epic Who-ness I think I may ever see. No second chances, indeed. Though the bit with Harriet Jones that followed (trying to be vague for spoilers) was really quite horrible, although even there in a good way. And proper cup of tea? Why Whovians find Santa scary? Really the whole episode was 10,000 miles past awesomeness.

In fact? Take this line, switch "bad" for "good" and "good" for "bad," and you have a fair approximation of my reaction to that special.

Harriet Jones. Oh, that was brutal, and always left me with a bit of a queasy feeling about Ten. Still, that's not the last we see of her, so there's that. (Zips lips to avoid spoilers.)

It helps that this isn't actually my first introduction to Ten; I'd seen through the end of Martha's year before going back and watching Nine and finding out that there actually was a Christmas special I'd never seen. ("New Earth," the one with the hospital and the cats, was the first episode of DW I ever saw.) so by the time I saw this episode, DW feels like an old friend and I know this isn't all there is to him. And even with that it's unsettling.

I'm glad to hear the Harriet Jones character isn't gone for good. She's such fun in a sort of everyman kind of way that I'd like sot see what becomes of her.

As an aside, and as much as I love Ten, I think Nine has really become my favorite doctor, at least of the two I've seen so far. (With Eleven, I don't think I know him well enough to judge.) Nine just has equal parts rage and hope. I also love the way that humans aren't particularly special to him, they aren't the center of his reality in the way they seem to be for Ten, but in spite of all that we matter and are important. We're one blip on the radar of reality, and we still count. Love that.

Yaaaay! I fell hopelessly in love with Tennant-as-Ten from that moment. The Doctor in stripey pyjamas having to be revived with tea and then fighting a broadsword duel with an alien commander - on Christmas Day!

(The Hitchhiker tributy-ness of it all was just a great big lovely bonus)

That, right there, is what I meant by the epic Who-ness of it all. Sherlock it ain't, but DW is definitely finishing a close second in terms of favorite TV shows these days which basically means first among any show it would ever be possible to beat out in my mind. And sharing it with friends just makes it that much better.
