the Philippines typhoon, and a fic offer

I'm sure I'm not the only one watching the news out of the Philippines this week and finding it all a bit heartbreaking. It is heartbreaking, and like most people I want to do a bit to help. More than a bit, if I'm being honest.

I've also been wanting to write a little more fanfic lately. I've obviously been mostly taken by House M.D. and Sherlock lately, mostly the BBC verse but it's also rekindled my dormant love of the Doyle originals. I've also been rereading The Hunger games to get ready for the movie, and I wouldn't mind trying my hand at a bit of Hobbit-based fic (book preferably), either. And I've been thinking quite a bit about rereading Swordspoint so if anyone wants fic in that verse (for the first book only, please) I'd be willing to try my hand at that.

So I thought I'd make an offer, both to spur on my muse and to get people involved in this particular cause. Give me either:

a) A quote from one of those sources, or
b) a character(s) along with a short theme, like "Bilbo and Thranduil, debts repaid" or whatever

... and I'll write you a fic on it.

I know, I'm rubbish at following through on these things. But I promise at least three hundred words each to the first three people who comment. And I'll do my absolute best to write more than just that.

What I ask in return - and really, this is more suggestion than requirement - is that you donate to some group helping out in the Philippines right now. The CS Monitor has a good list of groups involved in the area, and I've personally donated through Doctors Without Borders because I happen to be familiar with the group and know they do good work. Catholic Relief Services is also a good group to donate through IMO. But really, who is much less important than that, I think. And if you really can't donate, it's not like I'll be checking up on you or anything. I'd just like to use this as a bit of a nudge, if I can. Also to nudge me to actually write. *g*

That's a wonderful offer. I'd love an h/c scene in which someone is worried about Bilbo... maybe when he's unconscious and invisible after the Battle of the Five Armies, and no one can find him. Or maybe, after he's found, he has a mild concussion and someone quietly looks after him and makes sure he's okay.

I've just sent a story off to my beta reader and will post it in the next few days. It turned out to be more psychological than physical comfort, which I hope is okay. But as someone who's had concussions (klutziness), that's one moment in canon that I can empathize with.

Oh, how wonderful! Whatever you write will be greatly appreciated. I think Doctors Without Borders will receive my donation.

I had a mild concussion after a car accident about 10 years ago; it was quite a strange few days.

And it's posted! Hope you enjoy. Here's a conversation with a lot of TLC and laughter, between Bilbo and Galion after the Battle of the Five Armies.

Apple Bruised Makes Apple Pie

Thanks to Linda Hoyland and Kaylee Arafinwiel for the quick beta.

Ooh, Swordspoint! Near the end of the book, where Alec leaves his grandmother's house after pocketing some silver ornaments. What does he do with them? What happens if he tries to sell them?

I've already donated to ShelterBox, a charity which gives practical help by providing tents, water purification equipment, cooking utensils and the like.

I had a lot of fun with this, Jay! It's the first time I've written a full-fledged Swordspoint story, and it was nice crawling back into that world.

Anywho: Keepsakes

Thank you for nudging me to donate which I have been meaning to do this week. A donation has been made in your honor to the International Red Cross.
A story about disaster relief or rebuilding after the destruction of Laketown.

While I can't donate right now, I do offer my prayers and good thoughts for the people affected by the disaster.

On that note; how about the people affected by the coming of the Dragon, and the Desolation of Smaug? When Dale was laid waste and Erebor was captured by the dragon, what were the thoughts of the refugees?

(Please, I beg of you, no Thranduil paying 'homage' to the Dwarven king. xD He might have acknowledged him, but he'd never submit to him. One of the very few things in the first film that made me want to shout at the screen)
