sicky updateage

The corner pharmacy does not get a gold star today. Or anything short of a boo-hiss. I went there to fill the prescriptions I'd gotten at the hospital yesterday and they filled two of them but not the third, because it's available in OTC form so my insurance wouldn't cover it. Which is fine. Better than fine, actually; I have kind of a low cap on prescription drugs, and really prefer to use it as little as possible.

The problem is, they didn't mention to me that the third prescription wasn't filled. I happened to notice there were only two copay charges so I was able to buy the OTC version. But this is treating a rather unpleasant but TMI-ish symptom. If I'd gone all the way down to street level (I live on the fifth floor of a walk-up) when I was feeling pretty awful, and then didn't get the one medicine I really needed and couldn't get it until tomorrow. That would have seriously ticked me off.

Also picked up some dehydrated soup, soda crackers and cereal from the grocery store. I'm still not feeling adventurous to try anything that's not easy on the stomach. Even real chicken soup has veggies and more chicken than I really want to try just yet. The dehydrated stuff has been processed to within an inch of its life, what passes as "chicken" is really little more than a kind of paste for seasoning, even the noodles are thin. I did pick up some carrots which I may chop up and add if I feel up to it. Also bought Gatorade, per french_pony's suggestion. And don't worry, I'm drinking loads of water. I'm keeping an old soda 2L bottle, washed out and now refilled with tap water, by my bed and I've gone through it twice since I got home last night. Haven't been able to eat much at all, though, and the Gatorade is actually appealing, so we'll keep it up a bit.

One thing my excursion in search of soup + meds showed me was that I'm not nearly as better as I thought I was. Achey muscles, easily out of breath, head spinning after stnding up waiting for the pharmacists, etc. All of which tells me that should cancel class tomorrow, which clears my schedule through next Monday. Not ha1ppy to have to do it, but I'll manage. Today was a royally low-key day - I watched musicals all afternoon, The King and I and Pygmalion (what's it called - the one with Eliza Dolittle and Professor Higgins) and half of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. Basically I stayed curled up on the sofa, and it still took it out of me to walk around and run local errands for an hour. So yeah, teaching is probably beyond me.

I'd also love some more Tolkien-themed questions on my last post. Really, you'll be doing me a favor by giving me something to do. Also, fanfic recommendations on anything you know I like (Tolkien, Swordspoint, Sherlock ACD or BBCverse, HP, Hunger Games, etc.) would be much appreciated. Because, like Sherlock, I'm bored. And how.

Right, then. I'm emailing my students, then making soup, and then probably curling back up for more fic-reading or DVD time. I'm in the mood for something Halloweenish, so I'll probably to the Johnny Depp version of Willy Wonka. Which, you know, is not particularly seasonal but it always seems that way. Something about kids and a candy factory and the fanciful outfits in that version in particular, I guess.

My Fair Lady Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn. "I Could Have Danced All Night".

I love Seven Brides for Seven Brothers it's my second favorite old-school politically incorrect sexist movie. (My favorite is The Quiet Man) My LEAST favorite (as in I can't stand it, is McClintock).

I just rec'd a great fic on my LJ: Voices at the Door by Rhymer. An absolutely lovely Bilbo and Aragorn friendship fic! And brand spanking new, too!

I'm glad you like Gatorade. I detest it, but it does serve a useful purpose when you are dehydrated, which gastroenteritis can do to you. Keep on taking it easy. Do you have any ginger? You can add that to your chicken soup to help settle your tum. I always add ginger, lemon and garlic to chicken soup even if I am making it from a package (or a can!).

Swordspoint recs? Did somebody say Swordspoint recs?

Here are my A03 bookmarks. There's all kinds of fun stuff! Vampire AU's! High School AU's! PWP!

They are all lovely, but I particularly recommend:

"Windfall" by elfscribe5 - the very first SP fic I ever read, and still a favorite.

"An Anatomy of the World" by Yunitsa, another lovely how-they-met story.

"Of Smoke and Gold and Breathing" by wordsofastory. The one where Alec washes his hair, and Richard combs it out for him. One of the most sensual stories I have ever read, in any fandom.

"A Shadow on the Moon" by our own jay_of_lasgalen. Really wonderful characterization in this one!

Also, I don't know if you're familiar with 00Q (James Bond "Skyfall" pairing, Bond with a lovely young Q ) but there's an excellent 00Q/Sherlock crossover, "Never Alone".

Not a question/recommendation about fic, but your comment about the five-story walkup reminded me... should I even be looking at jobs in NY?

There's lots of library positions, but stairs are kinda my kryptonite, so if it's impossible to find an apartment without a maximum of 3 steps before you can get into it...

Here's something to occupy your time... A science quiz!

I only got 27 of 50 questions correct. *sigh* Apparently I've been out of school for far too long.
