Sherlock vs. The Hobbit

It's really quite amusing - for nearly a decade I work in the Tolkien fandom. I've been interested in other things that have come along in the meantime (Hunger Games, Harry Potter, Star Trek reboot, House) but have never really felt truly fannish about them.

And when a new fandom grabs me by the jugular and won't let go? It's about a famously short man who is drawn to adventure and ultimately forms true friendships through the thrill of a chase. A man played by Martin Freeman, no less. And with Smaug as his best friend which, granted, doesn't fit quite so well, but is still beyond amusing.

And really, the bits of fannish I find most amusing? Almost all have a Hobbit connection.

It's been a while since I've been this head-over-heels in love with a new fandom. I can't deny that's part of it. But the more I think about it, Sherlock seems to be about the things I love most about Tolkien: cleverness and heart and friendship and sacrifice and falling from great heights without really dying and Martin Freeman's bedroom eyes and the British accents and...

Yeah. If anyone needs me, I'll be over here in the corner, trying not to squeal conspicuously.
