BBC Sherlock + Doyle Fic Recs

I've been doing a bit of reading in the Sherlock Holmes fandoms lately, and have stumbled across some really nicely-done stuff.

1. Performers in a Leading Role by Mad_Lori is a Sherlock BBC AU where John and Sherlock are actors and the rest of the cast play Hollywood-ish roles. It's my current longish fic I have loaded on my phone, and it's really quite brilliant. One thing this fic gets that I haven't seen really addressed quite as well is the way Sherlock is benefiting from a majorly unacknowledged case of class privilege. I don't want to spoil it, but if you've ever been irritated on Sally's or John's or Greg's behalf that Sherlock seems to see the world as his oyster, do check out this fic. Or if you just want to see a well-written story about how John and Sherlock might have gotten to know each other under different circumstances. Very well done.

2. Murderous, Codependent by rageprufrock sounds odd but it's really quite lovely. Lestrade adapts two cats that must not be separated, an orange tabbly and a black cat that happen to be named Sherlock and John. And it's really quite perfect.

3. Detente, author unknown (for the acd_holmesfest exchange) is a gapfiller for A Study in Scarlet. I know many people from the Tolkien fandom enjoy fanfics that deal with what I call historicity - the conceit that Tolkien's books are actual historical documents. This story does similar work for the Doyle stories, looking at how Lestrade might have reacted to John Watson's comments about him in the story he published about that case. This story was very believable and made the world of 221B seem just a bit more authentic.

4. Also, I'm not sure if I mentioned it or not, but I received my own piece for acd_holmesfest. I keep meaning to write a proper review of it, going through all the things that I absolutely loved about it: the references to Plato and Xenophon, women in silky pants and luscious gardens, disguises that just left me smiling, sexual politics of more than one variety but always done with suitable subtlety and discretion. I asked for a thinking-person's fic, and this definitely qualifies. So do check it out if you haven't already. Written on Sand, author unknown.

I know it's been a while since I've done a Tumblr round-up. Really must fix that when I have the time and/or energy. In the mean time, you can always browse through what I've been sharing recently:

All the Sherlocks (Ex.: lovely Mycroft + Sherlock fanart)
All the Other Fandoms (Ex: Steampunk R2D2)
All the Non-Fannish Beauties (Ex.: beautiufl old books)
All the Non-Fannish Seriousness (Ex.: a brilliant but disturbing PSA for domestic violence)

Sherlock meta over at Tumblr on the drug use in HLV

For the interested, I wrote a longish Tumblr post on whether Sherlock's drug use at the beginning of His Last Vow was a drug relapse or something else. I also talked a bit about how the combat stress he faced between Reichenbach and his return in The Empty Hearse might have affected him and be feeding into this situation.

I also know I'm unforgivably behind on answering comments and the like. It's not for lack of purpose, as some hobbits would put it. I'm just beyond busy between end-of-term grading and the job search (which actually is moving forward - this is good busy-ness, and I'll share more details when I can). But just because I'm not replying doesn't mean I'm not reading, and I will get back to people someday. I hope. So if you have thoughts on what I said here, I'm always eager to read what people think.
