So as part of my effort to clean up my fanfic I wanted to delete my stories from FF.net. I haven’t posted anything there in ages and lots of the stories are ones I’m not too proud of and wouldn’t mind there not being available.


The problem: I was registered using an @netscape.net address. A few years back Netscape and AOL merged, and everyone with a Netscape address got a new AOL one. If you email me at MartaL0712@netscape.net (the old addy) it bounces back, but I do have MartaL0712@aol.com just because I have the old @netscape.net account.


Apparently, since I cannot receive emails FF.net can neither delete my account or give me access to it. Never mind the fact that this is a company-wide issue, and I can (and did) point them to the many examples of threads online discussing just this situation.


Anyone have any experience with FF.net that would point to a way to handle this? I guess it’s not a huge deal, but it kind of bothers me…

If you remember the password to the Netscape account you can use it for log in (if it was changed to an AOL account it shouldn't matter since the site has the Netscape email tagged to the account) then delete your stories and, if you want, change your account name. You can't deregister an account on there but you can change it so it's unrecognizable.

The problem is that, in at least some sense, the Netscape account no longer exists. Back in 2006 Netscape emails were transitioned to AOL accounts, meaning if you had (e.g.) IgBard@netscape.net you would be given an IgBard@aol.com. When you go to www.netscape.net you are redirected to http://netscape.aol.com, and if you log in with your IgBard username and the password of your old Netscape account, you'll see the inbox for IgBard@aol.com.

The problem is they stop forwarding emails a while ago, so if I sent an email message to IgBard@netscape.net, it would just bounce back to me as undeliverable. And when I ask FF.net to reset my password and send the new one to my email address that's on file - MartaL0712@netscape.net - that email bounces back to the FF.net bot as well. I still have the username and password I used to log in to my MartaL0712@netscape.net email account, but that just takes me to my MartaL0712@aol.com inbox - there's no way that I can see to actually read any email sent to that account.

I've emailed AOL to see if there's any workaround, but my experience with their TS hasn't exactly been encouraging. :-S

I understand that. The point is it doesn't matter for an FFN log in because the site isn't emailing you, only using what was a valid email address at the time you set up your account for identification. So you should still be able to get into FFN by typing in the netscape address and using your FFN password. The only problem would be if you don't remember your FFN password, they couldn't email you a new one.

I guess I wasn't clear on this point. I can't for the life of me remember my FFN password since I haven't logged in in close to five years. I may try to see if I can think back to what I might have used at the time. But the ones I thought I used as passwords back then aren't working.

You know, I didn't ask that specifically. I suggested that they leave a review on a story archive where those same stories were hosted, and that I could reply to it to show I am who I say I am. But not the adding alternate email thing. It's worth a shot in any event.

I don't have any advice to give, but I can hand you a big bottle of sympathy. The Pit of Voles is always a pain to deal with.

Throw in frustrations dealing with AOL, too, and you've about got the score of it. Let's just say sympathy wine is very much appreciated. I've just about given up on it being too much stress to be worth it, but it still seems frustrating since this *should* be fixable, but apparently isn't because of bad support service. Ah, well. :-)

I can empathize with your frustration. Deleting a bunch of old stories shouldn't be that hard to do, once you can prove you're the actual owner of the account in question! But when it comes to the Pit of Voles, nothing is ever easy...
