I won't do this one myself; too ship-oriented for me

Show us an example of your personal headcanon

Denethor has been carrying on long-distance games of chess by mail with most of the movers and shakers of Middle-earth - Thengel and eventually Theoden, Imrahil, Hurin of the Keys, Thrain of Dale, even Thorongil (though that last game is more a ruse for toying out the mystery of Thorongil's identity than a genuine chess game, since the letters come too slowly). It wasn't unusual for Faramir to slip into his office while in Minas Tirith and move a chess piece on their board, then leave without comment.

As a teenager Boromir once tripped over the table holding the boards and ruined over a decade's worth of games, not to mention the mearas breeding-stock Theoden had promised him if he won the game (which Denethor still believes he was within three moves of doing). As penance, Boromir had to sacrifice an hour of sword-practice for chess lessons, which Boromir hated at the time but he later credited as teaching him more about military strategy than anything else.

The closest I've come to writing any of this is "A Game of Chess, though that story is (a) several years old [so not up to my recent standards] and (b) more about Faramir than Boromir. The idea is usually in my head when I'm writing Gondor fanfic, though.

PS - I understand about the shippy quality. I'm trusting my friends to not ask too much about that (since they're no more interest in ships than I am), and if they do, I may use any kind of relationship - familial, friendship, etc., not just romantic.

That's a tough one, because I have so many favorite authors. But one who will always have a special place in my heart is tanaquilotr, a great friend and also a very talented author who has moved on to different fandoms.

Back in the heyday of Lord of the Rings she started a series of stories about Faramir's childhood, "Cup of Bitterness." She only ever wrote one part of it, a substantial story about Denethor and the palantir set around Faramir's birth that is a wonderful stand-alone story on its own. She showed a real gift for writing Denethor as a humane family-man without losing that edge that defines him in both book and movie-canon. So if I had one request it would have been another installment or two of this particular series, I think.

Btw, Tanaqui if you're reading this: I don't mean this as a guilt trip or an actual request for more CoB. I don't want to drag you back to the Tolkien fandom when you're happy and productive where you are. Just take it as a complement that I liked this story (and really, so many others) so much that I still like thinking about them years later.

I just love it when just a simple question/answer leads me to a new story that I haven't read and just enjoyed a great deal. A total gift. Thanks for your thoughtful response and the link.
