If pedagogy classes wanted to be really useful, they'd give lessons in Teacher Judo for how to deal with this sort of thing.

I've attempted to deal with such issues in my classes by stating a Classroom Definition of the word "myth," that a "myth" is a story that a culture uses to explain itself to itself (shamelessly stolen from Dan Savage's description of his older brother's philosophy). Using this definition, a music class can accept that all myths have some kind of truth to them, that truth and fact can be separate, and we can all move ahead with the lesson on music and nationalism now kthx.

So far, so good . . .
